ANNOUNCING DAVID (XUXA) WEBSTER'S 3RD ANNUAL "RETURNING TO BRAZIL GOING-AWAY
PARTY/SAMBA JAM/POTLUCK/PICNIC" IN GOLDEN GATE PARK,THIS SATURDAY,
OCTOBER
22!!!
[this time it's also a fundraiser -- and big samba drumming event --
accepting donations for "casa samba" samba school in new orleans...please
read on!]
so here's another one of my really fancy invitations for my picnic/party
in
golden gate park in san francisco in a few days (at the end of this
week)...well, whatever. i'm just thrilled i'm as technologically advanced
as
i am to be getting this out at all! my sincere apologies to those of
you who
are receiving this more than once.
so, i'm NOT going back to brazil now -- not until january, actually
-- so
this is really my "I *WISH* I WERE GOING AWAY PARTY!!" but it's also
just to
celebrate everything there is to celebrate -- and there's always a
lot of
good to get happy about, even in a world that's got a lot of depressing
stuff going on it it -- so this is it: a potluck barbeque (brazilian
style
churrasco), samba drumming jam/batucada (bring instruments and dirty
dancing
shoes and join in, for the period from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.!), pagode samba
sing-a-long (hopefully) and lots of fun people -- same scene as my
other
going away/coming back/whatever parties in the park over the past few
years.
hope you can come!
this time i'm trying to make it even bigger and better, with the added
participation of showman/percussionist/capoeirista/mestre curtis pierre
from
"casa samba" samba school in new orleans...and hoping to drum up donations
for his samba school in new orleans, too!
first, the details:
BARBEQUE/BRASILIAN DRUMMING JAM/POTLUCK/"GOING AWAY" (IN SPIRIT) PARTY
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2005
FROM 12:00 NOON UNTIL DARK (6 OR 6:30 P.M.) with BATUCADA AND DRUMMING
FROM
2 P.M. TO 5:00 P.M.
AT GEORGE WASHINGTON GROVE IN GOLDEN GATE PARK, near the corner of
Lincoln
and 25th Avenue on the south side of the park (exact same place as
previous
parties -- see map at bottom of message).
WHAT TO BRING: POTLUCK FOOD CONTRIBUTION (meat for the grill, veggies,
salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, whatever!), and WHATEVER YOU
CARE TO
DRINK.
WHAT I'LL PROVIDE: barbeque, dishes and forks and cups, a portable bathroom,
and a collection of fun, interesting and lovely people -- like you
and your
friends!
WHAT ELSE TO BRING: your DRUM, samba-dancing shoes (OR BARE FEET --
it's a
grassy meadow), BLANKETS, LAWN CHAIRS, dogs, frisbees, whatever. if
you have
a COOLER or FOLDING TABLE or anything else you think would help, please
bring it! it's a big grassy meadow, kid-friendly place...AND THE WEATHER
IS
PREDICTED TO BE 65 DEGREES WITH *ZERO* CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION!! my
voodoo
is, um, powerful!!
IF ANYONE IS WILLING TO HANDLE THE BARBEQUE FOR AN HOUR, PLEASE LET
ME KNOW
(EITHER IN ADVANCE OR WHEN YOU GET THERE) -- i need help with this
and don't
want any one person to get stuck on the grill for too long, so that
everyone
has a chance to circulate and enjoy the other parts of the party, so
i'm
trying to get some voolunteers to take turns like for an hour each
or
something. IT'S FUN being the churrasqueiro -- all you do is cook the
meat
and cut it up, and people hang around you, letting you know how really
special you are!! everyone will LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOU and you get
to MEET
EVERYBODY! plus it's really nice and helpful and i'd appreciate it
lots and
lots. so please consider helping this way if you're so inclined (thanks!!).
IF YOU ARE PART OF A BAND, SAMBA SCHOOL, ETC., PLEASE SEND THIS ON TO
YOUR
GROUPLISTS -- MAISA? CRISTINA? BRAZUCA BROWN? SAMBAO PARA O POVO? EVA,
COULD
YOU PLEASE SEND IT TO OUR TECOLOTE GROUP? JOSEPHINA, COULD YOU PLEASE
SEND
IT TO THE OLD ESTRADA REAL LIST? QUILOMBO? FOGO NA ROUPA? WHO'S IN
CONTACT
WITH GAMO? MEU XARA/NOBODY FROM IPANEMA? NEIVA E RAMON, MARK E REGIS,
SUAS
GALERAS MARAVILHOSAS? ALEX/EMILIANO/BAT MAKUMBA? BETO? CONCEICAO? CLAUDIO?
I
WANT TO MAKE THIS AS BIG A SAMBA EVENT AS POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY WITH
THE
ADDED ELEMENT OF CURTIS PIERRE AND THE FUNDRAISER:
here's the thing: new orleans' first samba school, "casa samba", is
in dire
need of help after the tragedy there in august, and i am urging everyone
to
please bring whatever you can as a cash (or check) donation, to help
a
really great cause for a special organization in a place that's in
terrible
need...plus curtis will have some of his artwork and cds for sale,
too. casa
samba has a special mission...please read on:
my friend curtis pierre runs "casa samba" in new orleans and is a master
percussionist/sambista/teacher of brazilian-style samba rhythms (as
well as
being a great performer). he's on the west coast doing workshops and
private
lessons (and coming to my party) as part of a fundraising effort to
help
casa samba and the (mostly poor) kids who are part of it. casa samba
is the
new orleans samba school run by curtis and carol pierre. what makes
it
really special is the fact that curtis and carol go into the ghettos
and
projects around new orleans and find kids to play in the bateria or
dance.
these kids, many of whom are at-risk kids who have very little in the
world,
become part of a positive gang. they have colors, a language (that
of samba)
and skills which set them apart. perhaps most importantly, they have
the
house, casa samba, where they can always go -- and it's drug-, alcohol-
and
violence-free. they call curtis and carol "Mr. Curtis" and "Ms. Carol".
their site: http://www.casasamba.com/
checks can be made out to curtis pierre, or to casa samba...AND curtis
will
be selling some of his artwork and his cds as well...check it out!
*as you can imagine, they're in dire need of help right now...and it's
a
good feeling to be creating an opportunity to help do something for
new
orleans, and in the context of samba, too! who didnt feel that pit
in their
stomach watching in desperation as that tragedy happened in new
orleans...and here is a chance to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, IN AN UP-FRONT
AND
PERSONAL WAY -- AND A FUN ONE, TOO! curtis will be doing some performing
at
the party during the drumming part (from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) that you
shouldn't miss...and please take advantage of this chance to make a
difference in new orleans, where help is really needed...and you get
to feel
good about yourself, too!*
any questions, write me at xuxaxo@gmail.com or call me at 415 341 4083.
hope
to see you!!
cheers, david
